Badlands National Park

Badlands National Park by LietMotiv

There’s only five days left to vote in the Your Parks Video Challenge, sponsored by the National Park Foundation. Featured online are dozens of tourist-shot videos of some of the country’s 391 national parks and what it means to them, their families, and the country. Checking out the videos – from Badlands National Park in South Dakota to Harpers Ferry National Historic Park in West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland – is a great way to get a closer look at parks you haven’t seen yet or ones you haven’t been to in a while. Voting, which takes place at http://yourparks.nationalparks.org, ends Tuesday, and in the mean time, you can follow the action on Twitter or on Flickr.

On Sunday, Sept. 27, PBS will air filmmaker Ken Burns’s The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, a 12-hour, six-part documentary on the parks system (you can watch clips on the PBS website). The series will present some of the most iconic and breathtaking views in the country and the movement to preserve them. – Hilary Solan

In March, we told you about the upcoming grand opening of the New Mexico History Museum. Right on schedule, this weekend’s opening festivities will kick off with a gala preview on Saturday for $200 a person. Sunday’s public opening features free admission from 12-6 p.m. to the History Museum and three other Santa Fe attractions—the Museum of Art, Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, and the Museum of International Folk Art. Admission to the History Museum is also free on Monday, May 25.

‘Flags-In’ at Arlington National Cemetery for Memorial Day 2008 by Army.mil

Before everyone takes a “sick day” on Friday and skedaddles for Memorial Day weekend, I ask where people are going. Mostly I hear about barbecues, beaches, and bare feet, but once in a while, it’s a grandparent’s or parent’s or another relative’s grave.

Since this post-Civil War order, flags have decorated the graves of the fallen all over the United States on Memorial Day, including one of the largest ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

The blog Enduring Wanderlust put up a few pictures of another aspect of Arlington: the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where a guard is posted around the clock to honor and protect the memory of unnamed servicemen and women. The custodians of the tomb do ask you to respect the ceremony by quietly observing. They will remind louder crowds of this.

Of course, if you don’t have plans to go to Washington already, you probably aren’t going. You may not be lucky enough to make it to Hawaii for the stunning Lantern Floating Ceremony either.

You’ll find a ceremony: where there are soldiers laid to rest, there will be people to honor them. — Andy Dost

Spring Road Trip Playlists Contest

Like a full tank of gas and a sense of adventure, the perfect soundtrack of new hits and old favorites is essential for a spring road trip.

At Rand McNally, we’ve compiled two of our own playlists to celebrate the weather getting warmer, the days getting longer, and the call of the open road. In the Spring Road Trip Playlists Contest, participants will be able to listen to both playlists on iNeverGetLost.com and submit their name suggestions for the playlists on the contest’s blog, starting today, March 25.

From April 10-17, members of iNeverGetLost.com will get to vote for their favorite playlist names. Two names will be picked, one for each playlist, and winners will be announced in late April.

The two winners will receive a three-night pass for La Quinta Hotels; a $50 iTunes Gift Card; a $50 gas card; and a Rand McNally prize pack including a 2009 Road Atlas, maps, and more. Just what they’ll need to hit the road.

Tempe's new light rail

Tempe’s new light rail courtesy of Joanne West Photography

Tempe, Ariz.—Community concern about road congestion and subsequent air pollution in Tempe resulted in the construction of a new 20-mile light rail system, which is set to open next week. An estimated 26,000 daily passengers in Mesa, Tempe, and Phoenix are expected to take the Valley METRO Light Rail when it starts running. The light rail system will take residents and visitors to some of the most popular destinations in Tempe, including Arizona State University, Sun Devil Stadium, the Mill Avenue District, and Tempe Town Lake. The project, which cost approximately $1.4 billion, has 28 stations and nine designated parking areas. During the grand opening next Saturday, parties will be held at stops all across the rail line.— Hilary Solan
