Badlands National Park by LietMotiv |
There’s only five days left to vote in the Your Parks Video Challenge, sponsored by the National Park Foundation. Featured online are dozens of tourist-shot videos of some of the country’s 391 national parks and what it means to them, their families, and the country. Checking out the videos – from Badlands National Park in South Dakota to Harpers Ferry National Historic Park in West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland – is a great way to get a closer look at parks you haven’t seen yet or ones you haven’t been to in a while. Voting, which takes place at http://yourparks.nationalparks.org, ends Tuesday, and in the mean time, you can follow the action on Twitter or on Flickr.
On Sunday, Sept. 27, PBS will air filmmaker Ken Burns’s The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, a 12-hour, six-part documentary on the parks system (you can watch clips on the PBS website). The series will present some of the most iconic and breathtaking views in the country and the movement to preserve them. – Hilary Solan
