The whole point of heading south from the White Mountains was to avoid a really long drive to the airport Friday morning. After Thursday’s visit to Mount Washington, the lunch stop at the Thompson House Eatery in Jackson, a look into the Weather Discovery Center and Zeb’s General Store in North Conway, then the farm in Brookfield, I landed in Durham at the New England Center. Its two towers are easy to miss, hidden back in the trees on a side street. I enjoyed the floor-to-ceiling windows, even in the two-story dining room, especially because I could imagine myself deep in the forest instead of deep in Durham (not that there’s anything wrong with it). The wait staff told me the light fixtures aren’t meant to evoke honeycombs but rather to represent the six states of New England—one side for each state. Bonus geo-geek points for folks who can name them!—Nathalie Strassheim
