Indianapolis, Ind.—The new airport in Indianapolis opened this week, giving the 8.2 million passengers each year a new 40-gate terminal that can accept international flights. Airport and city officials hope the bigger terminal and expanded parking options will bring more travelers through the new Indianapolis International Airport. The $1.1 billion project—the first terminal built since Sept. 11, 2001—has a new air traffic control tower, five-story parking garage, and fire station. Another upgrade is that travelers now have direct access when coming from I-70 by getting off at exit 68, which is immediately west of I-465.
The new terminal named for WWI’s Col. Harvey Weir Cook opened Tuesday, which was Veterans Day, with a tribute to the men and women who have served the country. The Indianapolis Star reported that 100 soldiers coming home from Iraq were greeted by loved ones at the new terminal.
Along with the new restaurants and shops in the terminal comes an array of public art. Passengers are greeted by entryway art by Indiana native Joe C. Nicholson. His grouping of lighted structures, which is visible from a mile into the sky, has been programmed to show a number of colorful displays. And inside, works by 16 other artists grace the halls.
