Boone, N.C. —In this beautiful mountain town not too far from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Boone is giving the nod to Boone. Daniel Boone, that is. Though historians have quibbled about whether the famed frontiersman ever wore a coonskin cap, for this first-ever Daniel Boone Days—running today through Saturday, Sept. 6—there will be an attempt at the biggest gathering of coonskin cap wearers. You can even buy a coonskin cap at the General Store if you want to join in the fun. Also on the event roster: a footrace up and down Howard’s Knob (that’s a mountain, for you city folks), a Daniel Boone look-alike contest, fiddler’s competition and more. Those old enough to remember the TV series Daniel Boone (1964-1970) may want to reminisce with actor Fess Parker as he peddles his Fess Parker wines. Coonskin caps optional. — Laurie Borman
