Wreath by Nathalie Strassheim |
Elmira, N.Y.—When a local artificial Christmas tree manufacturer approached the Sullivan family looking for permission to build the world’s largest artificial wreath on their hilltop property, the answer was, “Sure!” Anchored by four posts embedded in tons of concrete (the first one blew over) and 10 one-ton guy wires, the 56-foot-tall wreath is lit and twinkles over the Chemung River valley during the Christmas season. And on St. Patrick’s Day, a second set of lights forms a shamrock. Now, someone had to go and build something pretty much as tall and then put a tray of boughs underneath to somehow garner the title World’s Largest, somewhere else in the world, but for the citizens of Elmira, N.Y., the Sullivan wreath standing proud next to The Hill Top Inn is their record-holder. — Nathalie Strassheim
