Blackstone Hot Springs

Blackstone Hot Springs by Erin Vorhies

Truth or Consequences, N.M.—What seems like a mere place to top off the tank along I-25 in New Mexico isn’t at all. The fast-food restaurants and fuel fill-ups at exit 79 only scratch the surface of the town of Truth or Consequences (named for NBC’s classic radio show). Just beneath that surface is a water table of 104-degree mineral water, touted by locals as having great healing properties. A handful of bathhouses offer private rooms for soaking and rejuvenating, including the Blackstone on Austin St. As natural therapies make a comeback, mineral baths are offered as a therapeutic alternative to high prescription costs and the side effects of modern medicine. That’s the “truth” they’re selling … without the consequences. — Erin Vorhies
