Portland, Ore. — The temperature hit 101 degrees in Portland on Saturday. It felt like it, too. Friends took me on a tour of the town’s highlights, from the top of the city at Council Crest Park (1073 feet), where we viewed the snow-capped peaks of Mount Scott, Mount Adams, Mount Jefferson, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood. Hard to believe there was snow anywhere near this radiator. We scanned the gorgeous blooms of the International Rose Test Garden, but everyone was in a hurry to get back to the air-conditioned car. People claim it’s a dry heat, but it still felt like 101 to me. And it was a record high. When the sun comes up at 5:20 a.m. and doesn’t depart the sky until after 9:00, these sunny days can seem eternal. I hope all the Portlanders remember this day when it’s rainy, dark, and dreary. — Laurie Borman
