Near Crater Lake, Ore. — While gas prices may be sky-high, there’s one thing about buying gas in Oregon that makes it seem extra-luxurious. Here, it’s the land of full service. I drove up and pumped my own gas while the owner was inside listening to a NASCAR race. When I came in and told him how much I owed and wanted to pay, he said, “You must not be from around here.” I replied cheerily, “No, I’m from Chicago,” figuring he pegged my accent. “Because it’s illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon,” he added. I nearly fell over laughing, thinking he was kidding. “What do you do when you go to another state? Do people here know how to pump their own gas?” He didn’t find my brand of humor very funny. Maybe he’s heard that one before. — Laurie Borman
