Redding, Calif. — A dry thunderstorm produces hundreds of lightning strikes but no rain. In a drought-stricken region like the Shasta Cascades in California, that spells fire. That’s exactly what happened here a couple of days ago, and the result is smoke-filled skyline, light ash dropping everywhere. My canoe trip in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area was cancelled due to ash and smoke. I walked across the Sacramento River via the Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay in Redding. The bridge’s white spire blends right into the smokey white sky. It’s a mere inconvenience for me, and I hope for this community that rain comes soon. For tomorrow’s schedule, I’ll check the road conditions phone number in the Road Atlas for the drive ahead. — Laurie Borman
