Edgartown

Edgartown, Mass. — The Steamship Authority operates several ferries a day between Falmouth and Martha’s Vineyard, and can carry vehicles on board as well. You don’t need a car to get around Martha’s Vineyard though. The island of six towns is only about 100 square miles, and a reliable bus system along with many miles of bicycle paths render a car unnecessary.

I had great plans for my day on the Vineyard, but the endless rain meant I’d have to settle for listening to great romance stories instead. I didn’t get a chance to go on a lighthouse tour (I was told I wouldn’t have been able to see a thing!), ride bikes along the bike path, go kayaking, or take a full-moon canoe ride around a lake. It didn’t seem to matter though. Everything about Martha’s Vineyard says romance. The island once was a whaler’s town, and all the homes were once sea captain’s homes. Most are white with black or dark-green shutters, and many still have the widow’s walk around the highest floor. You can almost picture the old captain’s wives sitting on their rooftop platforms, waiting for their sailors to come home. Oh, and is there an actual vineyard here? Yes, but not with grapes. And four of the six towns are dry, so celebrating with wine might be a little tricky.
